If you synchronise the Windows AppData folder on your computer with Managed Nextcloud, this can lead to errors and performance losses. This article explains the background.

Note

The situation described in this article usually occurs when you synchronise the local user folder as a whole with Managed Nextcloud. This selection automatically includes the AppData folder.

What is the Windows AppData folder?

The AppData folder is located in your personal Windows user directory (path: C:/Users/username/...). In the AppData folder, programmes store data that is required for their operation. This can be a large number of small files, but also large files.

Further information on the AppData folder can be found in the IONOS Digital Guide "Displaying and editing the AppData folder in Windows".

AppData is not Displayed

The AppData folder is a "hidden" folder in your Windows system. This means that it is not displayed in the standard Windows Explorer settings and therefore cannot be excluded from a synchronisation selection.

Further information can be found in the IONOS Digital Guide "Windows: Show hidden files and folders".

Avoiding the AppData Problem

If the AppData folder is synchronised with Managed Nextcloud, the large number of files can lead to performance losses and obsolete files can take up unnecessary storage space.

To avoid these problems, add folders below the Windows user folder, e.g. documents and images, individually and remove the AppData folder from the synchronisation.
