A sitemap.xml file is an XML document that informs search engines such as Google, Bing, or Yandex about the structure and content of your website. This article explains what you need to do if the sitemap.xml is not recognised by the Website Checker.
Reasons for issues with sitemap.xml
It can happen that Website-Checker does not recognise a sitemap.xml. Reasons for this can be:
- The sitemap.xml is saved under an unusual path and is manually transmitted to Google. Create a sitemap.xml in the root directory of your website to resolve this.
- The sitemap.xml exists, but contains errors: In this case, follow Google's advice "Manage sitemaps with the Sitemaps report" to rule out errors with the sitemap.xml.
