Creating Your Own FTP Subdomain
Please use the “Print” function at the bottom of the page to create a PDF.
If you use an FTP program to connect to your wespace, you need to enter the server name of the IONOS FTP server in your program. As an alternative to the generic name of the IONOS FTP server, you can also use your own sub domain for FTP access.
Advantages of your own FTP subdomain
A server name such as ftp.yourdomain.com is easier to remember than the generic IONOS subdomain (for example homexxxxxxxxx.1and1-data.host or accessxxxxxxxxx.webspace-data.io).
Some FTP programs cannot handle the domain extension .host as server name and therefore cannot establish a connection. This can be fixed by using your own subdomain.
Determine server name
Make a note of the name of the IONOS FTP server:
Step 1
Log on to the IONOS and select the relevant contract.
Step 2
In the left navigation, select Secure FTP account.
Step 3
Make a note of the server name displayed in the Connection Data section.
Hint: The server name has the form homexxxxxxxxx.1and1-data.host or accessxxxxxxxxx.webspace-data.io, for example home123456789.1and1-data.host or access123456789.webspace-data.io.
Create an FTP subdomain
Now create the subdomain you want to use as an additional server name:
Step 1
Click here to go to your Domains section.
Step 2
In the domain overview, click on the domain for which you want to create your FTP subdomain.
The domain details are displayed.
Step 3
Switch to the Subdomains tab.
Step 4
Under Create subdomain, click Add subdomain.
Step 5
Enter the desired subdomain name and click Save.
The subdomain is created.
Connect FTP subdomain
Finally, you need to connect your new subdomain to the FTP server:
Please note: By following these steps, all other functions of the subdomain (email, website hosting, etc.) will be disabled. We therefore recommend that you use subdomains created exclusively for this purpose.
Step 1
Click on your newly created subdomain in the subdomain overview to display the details.
Step 2
Switch to the DNS tab at the top.
The DNS configuration of the subdomain is displayed.
Step 3
Click Add Record.
Step 4
Click CNAME.
Step 5
In the Point to field, type the full name of the IONOS FTP server you determined above.
Hint: The field Hostname should already be prefilled with the name part of your subdomain. You can leave the other settings as they are.
Step 6
Click on Save.
Step 7
The system now informs you about the effects of changing the DNS configuration. To agree, click Save again.
The IONOS DNS servers are now updated within one hour. You can then use your subdomain as an alternative server name for FTP connections.
Please note: It may take up to 72 hours until the FTP connection via the new subdomain is possible from any Internet connection. For more information, see the article Time Required for DNS Changes.
