If you want to run third-party services under your domain, such as Teamspeak, XMPP (Jabber), VoIP or Microsoft 365, then you need to add an SRV record to your IONOS domain.

Adding an SRV Record

You can add the SRV record right in the Domains & SSL section of your IONOS account.

  • For the desired domain, click on thegear symbol under Actions and selectDNS.

  • Select the desired domain and click DNS under Actions.

  • Click on ADD RECORD and select the entry SRV.

  • Enter the information you received from the service provider here. You can also determine some values yourself. Here is an overview:

Service

Specify the name of the service you want to run with your domain. You can obtain this from the respective third-party provider. You do not have to enter the underscore "_".

Protocol

Select the required transport protocol. TCP, UDP and TLS are available. TCP is usually used. The protocol you need to choose is determined by the service you want to use.

Host Name

Enter a valid hostname of the service under which the service can be accessed. You can obtain this from the respective third-party provider. Example: For Lync, the hostname sipdir.online.lync.com is specified.

Priority

Specify the priority with which the entry is to be handled. The lowest entries are given priority. Here the value with the highest priority is already entered with 0. If you add multiple SRV records for the same service, the host with the highest priority is passed. If the host cannot be reached, the next higher host is used. You can change this value if you wish. Numbers from 0-65535 are permitted.

Weight

If you have multiple hosts with the same priority, the number of requests sent to each host is determined by their weight, with a higher weight corresponding to multiple requests. A mean value of 5 is already specified here, but you can change it. If you do not need load balancing, enter the value 0 here. This shortens the processing time for SRV entries and simplifies reading SRV resource entries. Numbers from 0-65535 are permitted.

Port

Enter the port number used by the service's server here. You can find out which port number you have to use from the respective service.

TTL (Time To Live)

Optional: Select the desired TTL. By default, your settings are active immediately.

  • Click Save.

Your changes are effective at IONOS immediately. However, it can take up to 1 hour for the change to take effect externally due to the decentralized structure of the Domain Name System.
